The Complete Guide to Shipping Your Dog or Cat from the USA to Brazil

Brazil is a real, steady destination for us — we've shipped pets to São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Campinas, and Belo Horizonte, typically routing through a European or Latin American hub since direct US–Brazil live-animal cargo capacity is limited. The regulatory paperwork itself is fairly manageable, but Brazil has one thing almost no other destination in our guide series has: real import duties that can meaningfully affect your total cost — and a specific, well-documented way to avoid them. Getting this right is worth understanding before you book anything else.

Step 1: Microchip, vaccination, and the health certificate — simpler than you might expect

Here's something worth knowing upfront: Brazil's own official guidance does not actually require a microchip for your pet to enter — it's listed as optional on the government-approved certificate, though we implant one before travel anyway since it's simply good practice and several airlines expect it. Your pet needs a rabies vaccination given after the microchip (if you get one), with at least 21 days before travel for a first-time vaccination — we build in a bit of extra buffer above this legal minimum. No rabies titer/blood test is required from any country, including the US, and there's no import permit required for a personal pet shipment (permits apply only to larger commercial imports of dogs, cats, or other companion species). Your pet travels on a health certificate completed by a USDA-accredited vet and endorsed by USDA, valid for 60 days from issuance — a genuinely generous window compared to some of our other destinations.

Step 2: Understanding Brazil's import duty — and how to avoid it

This is the detail that catches people off guard, and it's specific to Brazil among the destinations we cover. Brazilian customs can apply import duties calculated on both your shipment's declared freight value and your pet's declared value — and without planning, this can add a meaningful amount to your total cost. There's a well-established way around most of it: if you (the pet's owner) travel to Brazil within six months of your pet's arrival, keeping your boarding pass or e-ticket as proof, the freight-value duty is generally waived. For older pets, a residence certificate from the Brazilian consulate (or proof of at least a year living abroad) can similarly reduce the duty applied to your pet's declared value. We'll walk you through exactly what documentation makes the biggest difference for your specific situation — this is one of the most valuable things we can help you plan for on this route.

Step 3: Snub-nosed breeds need extra planning

If your dog is a French Bulldog, Bulldog, or other brachycephalic breed, be aware that very few carriers on this route will accept snub-nosed breeds during warm-weather months, and some won't carry them at all. We've had to route around this by finding the one or two airlines still willing to carry these breeds seasonally — if this describes your pet, flag it with us as early as possible so we can plan your departure window accordingly.

Airlines and routing

We book across American Airlines, LATAM, Copa Airlines (via Panama City), and Air France-KLM (via Paris), choosing based on your departure city, your pet's size, and current capacity. One real routing constraint worth knowing: some routes simply don't have widebody aircraft available, which caps the maximum crate size that route can accept — we'll confirm this is workable for your pet's size before booking rather than after.

What happens on the Brazil side

Brazil-side customs clearance is billed separately from our quote and is typically handled by a Brazil-based partner who manages the paperwork, POA (power of attorney) requirements, and final release at the airport — this can be a notarized POA or a digital certificate, depending on your situation, and we'll help you get whichever one applies sorted out ahead of time. Some clients choose to handle Brazil-side clearance through a family member or their own local contact instead, which is entirely workable and can reduce cost — we'll lay out both options clearly.

Based on our own real Brazil quotes and invoices:

Typical range: roughly $3,000–$5,000 for our side of a single-pet shipment, plus Brazil-side customs clearance if you use our partner (commonly $1,000–$1,300+, though this can be reduced substantially if you qualify for a duty exemption as described above). Multi-pet shipments and larger dogs run higher, particularly on routes requiring a layover connection.

• Keep your boarding pass. If you're traveling to Brazil around the same time as your pet, this single piece of paper can meaningfully reduce your import duty — we tell every client this explicitly and it's saved real money on real shipments.
